My Korean mother-in-law loves camping in the wild. She‘s coming to Switzerland for 3 weeks. She thought she would be able to camp in the Alps as you showed in your photos of Iceland. I‘d love to make that possible for her. Knowing the strict Swiss regulations against camping in the wild, I contacted the SAC Brunnihütte responsable and phoned with my father who grew up in Engelberg to find a possible solution. Near SAC Brunnihütte, it‘s not possible („Jagdbanngebiet“), it‘s heavily controlled and fined.
I worked there during one season, so I know the area. There‘s a alp hut a bit lower, called Planggen. My father hiked up to there to talk with the shepherd. So we found a place where her tent will be tolerated.

If it only would be as easy as in other countries.

I undestand the ecological and wildlife protection considerations though. Not all tourists know how to behave with responsibility.

@Ema エマ Generally if you stay above the tree line and out of restricted wild live reserves, wild camping is at least tolerated in most cantons. Even if you wild camp above the tree line in a canton where it's forbidden, you're unlikely to get caught and fined... unless you pick one of the famous Instagram spots. 😉

@Harka that Hillberg is almost 10 years old and has withstood several storms in Iceland. Never had a better tent. Maybe a bit noisy when it's windy but apart from that a great tent.
