Brakes became pretty normal on mountain unicycles quite a while ago and my knees regularly tell me that they think that this is a good thing - usually when I don't use the brake as much as I should.

Yeah, most people associate unicycles only with clowns and circus. In fact disciplines are much more diverse, though. People tour the world on touring unicycles, do amazing tricks on trial unicycles, ride downhill trails on mountain unicycles (short muni), do road races... AFAIK the current record for the longest distance in one hour on tarmac is around 33km.
If you don't mind being tracked by the Goog, there are tons of amazing videos on YouTube.
